Consider whether your adult patient with diabetes or chronic kidney disease also requires cover for Listeria
Before a specific causative organism has been identified, consider whether your adult patient with diabetes or chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires empiric antibiotic cover for Listeria monocytogenes infection.
Diabetes is considered to be a risk factor for Listeria and empiric antibiotic cover for this bacteria is recommended.[92][93][94][95][96]
Some guidelines also list CKD as a risk factor for Listeria.[93][94]
The stage of CKD may affect the need for Listeria cover so consult your patient’s nephrologist or an infectious disease specialist (based on expert opinion).
