The prognosis for patients with celiac disease is good. Most, up to 90% in some studies, will have complete and lasting resolution of symptoms on a gluten-free diet alone. Ongoing gluten exposure, lactose intolerance, and irritable bowel syndrome account for most of the 10% of cases with persistent symptoms. Fewer than 1% of patients can be expected to develop refractory celiac disease.
