Evidence B

Mortality and ventilator-free days: there is medium-quality evidence that mechanical ventilation utilising a low tidal volume of 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight in patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or ARDS seems to be more effective compared with conventional or high tidal-volume mechanical ventilation at reducing duration of ventilation and mortality in the longer term.
