There has been a dramatic increase in the number of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). During 2015, the number of people in the US with a diagnosis of diabetes was estimated to be 23.1 million (7.2% of the US population). Approximately 95% of these individuals with diabetes are estimated to have type 2 diabetes.[6] The total included 132,000 children and adolescents aged under 18 years (0.18% of the total US population aged <18 years).[6]
