Diagnosis requires a thorough history from the patient and, if at all possible, from family members and friends. Treatment is most successful if AN is caught early; however, this is often difficult to do. Detection of eating disorders in their early stages, when psychological and physical symptoms are subtle, can be challenging for primary care physicians.
