Prognosis

Generally, the clinical outcome in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (including those with atypical bacterial pneumonia) can be predicted according to the initial severity of illness. Mortality rates in patients with less serious disease who are managed as outpatients are under 1%. However, patients with more serious disease, especially those who do not respond to initial therapy, may have mortality rates as high as 50%.[18]

Additionally, patients in long-term care facilities may be prone to respiratory disease outbreaks and higher mortality.[93]
