Overview of dermatitis

Introduction

Dermatitis is an umbrella term for a range of inflammatory skin conditions of varying aetiology. Common manifestations include erythema, scaling, vesicles, itching, and lichenification where there is chronic inflammation. Each type of dermatitis has distinct signs and symptoms, although in practice it may be difficult to differentiate between them and also between other inflammatory skin conditions.
