Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of ankle sprains: an evidence-based clinical guideline
| Published by: | Kerkhoffs GM, van den Bekerom M, Elders LA, et al., based on Dutch guidelines produced under the auspices of the Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy |
| Last published: | 2012 |
- Summary
-
An evidence-based, multidisciplinary guideline for all care providers (e.g., family and sports physicians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, radiologists) involved in the management of lateral ankle injuries. This guideline provides recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of recurrence of lateral ankle injury. Key diagnostic recommendations: 1. Use of the Ottawa Ankle Rules, developed to rule out fractures following acute ankle injury, is strongly recommended in both the emergency department and in general practice. 2. Patients should be re-examined 4 to 5 days after the trauma in order to conclusively diagnose an ankle ligament rupture. If a haematoma develops, and patients experience local pain on palpation and/or a positive anterior drawer test is present, ligament rupture is very likely.
