Uncommonly, serious complications occur such as infective endocarditis, severe mitral regurgitation, or sudden cardiac death. Patients at increased risk identifiable by clinical and echocardiographical features.
Mitral valve repair is the preferred treatment option in patients with mitral valve prolapse and severe mitral regurgitation.
